fsarchiver is a system tool that allows you to save the contents of a filesystem to a compressed archive file. The filesystem can be restored on a partition that has a different size, and it can be restored on a different filesystem. Unlike tar/dar, fsarchiver also creates the filesystem when it extracts the data to partitions. Everything is checksummed in the archive in order to protect the data. If the archive is corrupt, you just lose the current file, not the whole archive.
TRIXER creates catalogs of transparent file indexes. A transparent file index is an exact mirror of a directory, except that each of its file is void, thus "taking no space", while apparently having the same size of its indexed counterpart so as to describe it fully. This is accomplished by combining sparse files support with fusecompress on-the-fly compression technology. This is useful for many purposes, e.g. creating a catalog of your CD/DVD-ROM library to browse its contents without having to physically access it. The advantage of this software is that a TRIXER catalog is a plain mountable ext2 filesystem, allowing enhanced interoperability with the huge lot of available software to handle the catalog in a number of ways.
Back In Time is a simple backup tool for Linux (Gnome & KDE4) inspired by the "flyback project" and "TimeVault". The backup is done by taking snapshots of a specified set of directories. All you have to do is configure: where to save snapshot, what directories to backup, and when a backup should be done (manually, every hour, every day, every week, or every month). It acts as a "user mode" backup system. This means that you can backup and restore only folders to which you have write access.
The epitome suite consists of several discrete pieces that provide storage deduplication services. Deduplication is defined as the elimination of redundant data. The idea behind epitome is to provide a WORM-based archive/backup mechanism that is lossless and offers permanent storage with inherent data protection properties. Additionally, it provides several metadata formats and back-ends to meet several usage models. It provides a number of services to enable three major archiving technologies: CAS, SIS, and DEDUP.
CAN is a packaging program that uses a format similar to JAR, but with some improvements. CAN uses only existing, open source tools for its implementation. It packages any executable and libraries, supports executable CANs, and can even tweak environment variables before execution.
