PHP MIME Mail decoder class is a PHP class to parse and decode MIME email messages. It supports decoding single RFC 2822 MIME messages or archives that aggregate multiple messages in the mbox format. It can decode messages read from files or data strings. The bodies of multipart messages can be decoded into distinct sub-messages. Optionally, the message body data can be saved to separate files, so the class can handle messages larger than the available memory. The parser can tolerate some syntax errors in malformed messages that are not compliant with RFC 2822.
Elm Millennium Edition is a text-based mail client. There are two branches: Elm 2.4ME+, which is based on Elm 2.4, and Elm ME+ 2.5, which also incorporates some code from Elm 2.5. Elm Millennium Edition contains enhanced MIME and character set support. A subset of UTF-8 (Unicode) is handled. It can read mail from a local mbox and POP and IMAP folders and can pass mail to the PGP or GPG programs. It can also view digests as a mailbox and reassemble fragmented (message/partial) messages. It includes modules for TLS/SSL, iconv, and SMTP.
Dovecot is an IMAP server whose major goals are security and extreme reliability. It uses index files to optimally store the mailbox state, which makes it very fast even with huge mailboxes. Indexes won't prevent external mailbox updates, so Dovecot is still fully compatible with standard Maildir and mbox formats. There's also a fully featured POP3 server included.
Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by sites that process a lot of mail.
The procmail and formail mail processing package can be used to create mail-servers, mailing lists, sort your incoming mail into separate folders/files (real convenient when subscribing to one or more mailing lists or for prioritising your mail), preprocess your mail, start any programs upon mail arrival (e.g. to generate different chimes on your workstation for different types of mail) or selectively forward certain incoming mail automatically to someone.

It runs on any Linux or Unix-like operating system and is compatible with most email and Web servers, mail readers, and Web browsers.

It includes a Web server, an SMTP/POP3 server, a telnet server, an SSH server, an IRC server, a DNS server, a generic client/server pair for remote object access (Perspective Broker), and APIs for creating new protocols. It supports integration with GTK+, GTK+ 2, Qt, Tkinter, wxPython, Mac OS X (PyObjC) and Win32 event loops. It also supports TCP, SSL and TLS, UDP, Unix sockets, multicast, and serial ports. Supported protocols include HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, TOC, OSCAR (AIM and ICQ), SSH, DNS, IRC, NNTP, Jabber, SOCKSv4, Telnet, SIP (for VoIP), and XML-RPC and SOAP using external packages. Most protocols are supported as both servers and clients.
