Until LDAP, it was one of the only extensible, hierarchical, attribute-value directory services that could be used for managing NIS information. NetInfo was architected by the same person that designed NIS. Our port of Apple's Darwin NetInfo code includes an nss_netinfo module which integrates NetInfo with the GNU C Library, for transparent resolution of users, hosts, etc.
