The Linux Bootdisk HOWTO describes how to design and build boot/root diskettes for Linux on the Intel platform. These disks can be used as rescue disks or to test new system components. You should be reasonably familiar with system administration tasks before attempting to build a bootdisk.
ThePacketMaster Linux Security Server is a CD-based security auditing tool that boots and runs penetration testing and forensic analysis tools. It is handy for security auditors. Some tools included are nessus, ethereal, The Coroner's Toolkit, chntpw, and minicom. It includes modules for any Linux 2.4.20 SCSI driver.
Thinux is a thin-client server on a live CD. It boots a network of diskless computers to automatically start an application such as a Web browser. Each thin client machine acts as a cluster node to share its processing and memory resources with each other to take the load off the server. It is a turnkey solution that does not change nor rely on your existing systems to run. By booting from a removable CD, it does not lock-in the user so it is convenient to test. It is ideal for any organizations that require large deployment of software automatically and cost effectively.
VDMFEC implements Block ECC using a Forward Error Correction (FEC) code based on Vandermonde (VDM) matrices in GF(2^8) due to Luigi Rizzo. Given the FEC parameters K and N, with N greater than K, N blocks are written for every K input blocks in such a way that any K blocks are sufficient to reconstruct the data. That is, up to N - K blocks out of every group of N blocks may be lost without loss of data. VDMFEC's primary application is intended to be in recovering data from unreliable media such as diskettes. With appropriate parameters, files may be recovered even with many read errors. (Note that you must write the data to the diskette using this program in order to be able to recover the data later!)
Vexira Antivirus is virus defense system. It can identify which files may contain malicious code requiring further investigation, which greatly increases virus scanning speed. It features the ability to scan files automatically as they are accessed, configurable path protection, email notification, blocking of access to infected files, options to repair, rename, or delete infected files, automated Internet updating, virus scan archives (.zip, .rar, gz, .tar, etc.), a commandline scanner, scalable concurrent scanning, heuristic detection of new macro viruses, and low system resource requirements.
The WebReboot Plugin for Nagios is a suite of commands that can be used within Nagios to monitor a server and take corrective action if necessary via the WebReboot line of products. For example, the plugin can be used to alert you if a host is powered down, versus simply not responding to network requests. Likewise, it can be used to reboot a server if a host fails to respond to ping, or to shut down a server when a critical temperature threshold is exceeded. The commands can be mixed-and-matched with all existing Nagios commands, maximizing total network coverage.
alcolix is a minimal Linux rescue distribution with the goals of being small, compatible, and very usable. It has a cozy shell and a multitude of partition rescue/editing tools, all based on up-to-date releases (e.g., 2.4.x kernel with USB support). It uses cpio.bz2 data disks and has a full GRUB bootloader, memtest86, and more.
anyfs-tools allows you to recover and convert filesystems while using minimal extra disk space. Unlike other recovery tools, anyfs-tools doesn't copy all the files found on other disks (or partitions), but only saves information about the location of the file blocks to an external inode table. After recovery, a user may mount the damaged filesystem with anyfs and the external inode table and then interact with all recovered files with any program.
Archive2iso takes a directory tree and randomizes the files in the tree to stripe the files across several ISO files that can be archived or burned off to a CD. The ISO files are generated by calling the CDiso.pm module. It reads an array generated by an INCLUDE LIST so the ISO file can be made with mkisofs. The intended use is to stripe files across multiple CD/DVD randomly so if one disc is damaged all the files that were in the same directory will not be lost since files are spread across multiple disks. The actual files themselves are not split; all files remain in their original state.
bytecounter is a program that copies data while showing a status line indicating the data rate and estimated time remaining. Optionally, it retries on errors, which is useful for recovering files from bad media. It designed to be used "in-between" two programs to measure rate of data flow, such as between the output of a tar command and a file. It works with files, floppy disks, hard disks, terminals, tapes, CD-ROMs, FIFOs, and anything else you can think of.
