FIFE is a cross-platform 2.5D game creation framework written in C++ and Python. Games can be created with a combination of engine, editor tools, game specific scripts, and game content (e.g. maps, graphics, and sounds). The framework is not tied to any type of game (e.g. RTS, RPG), but instead provides a flexible platform for all of them. It supports different isometric views and a pure top-down view. Instead of full 3D flexibility, the engine focuses mainly on using high quality 2D graphics. This puts fewer demands on target platforms and also simplifies the framework and game development.
xBaK is a fan-made remake of the classic Sierra computer RPG "Betrayal at Krondor". It is a game engine that uses the data files that came with the original game by Sierra Online. You must already have your own copy, since the required data files are not distributed with xBaK. The game is still under development. The intro, the option dialogs, and the main game dialog are finished, but the game is not yet playable. Several tools for examining the contents of the data files are also available.
GNU FreeDink is a portable and enhanced version of the Dink Smallwood game engine. It aims at running the original game as well as its D-Mods (Dink MODules, or add-ons), with close compatibility, under new platforms. The internals of the engines are being cleaned up to allow for portability and later improvements.
Epiar is a space adventure/combat game where you begin as a shuttle pilot in a galaxy generally ruled by anarchy, with few stable governments and numerous rebel factions. You start your adventure off doing whatever you want, but generally trying to save up money for a new starship, your adventure taking off from there.
The WorldForge Project is developing a complete, distributable framework for massively multiplayer online roleplaying games. The system will include a number of fully developed roleplaying worlds with unique maps, histories, creatures and legends. To run these worlds on the servers a balanced but highly customisable set of roleplaying rules is being developed. Provisions will be made to allow others the ability to recode the servers to use alternate rule sets. A standard protocol named Atlas is being developed to allow a common communication layer between clients, servers, and associated tools. Turn Watcher is a tool based on Dungeons & Dragons rules. It is used to track the initiative of your players and monsters. It includes an option to roll initiative on every round, roll will, listen, and spot, and it has a status column that shows you the current status of your players. When you enter a player or monster, you also enter all of its modifiers, so the computer can take care of rolling all the dice for you. Still want to roll initiative? You can simply order the characters with the Move Up and Move Down options.
