Tripwire is a system integrity checker, a utility that compares properties of designated files and directories against information stored in a previously generated database. Any changes to these files are flagged and logged, including those that were added or deleted, with optional email reporting. Additionally, support files (databases, reports, etc.) are cryptographically signed.

tsocks provides transparent network access through a SOCKS version 4 or 5 proxy (usually on a firewall). tsocks intercepts the calls applications make to create TCP connections and determines if they can be directly accessed or need the SOCKS server. If they need the SOCKS server they connection is negotiated with the server transparently to the application. This allows existing applications to use SOCKS without recompilation or modification. tsocks is a wrapper library for the libc connect() call.

twonz is a small Perl/TK program which lets you generate and manage the endless quantities of passwords you may need to get anything done online. Rather than making an encrypted database or anything, it just calculates a secure hash of obvious information appended to a user-supplied pad. So you only have to remember the pad, and none of your passwords are actually stored anywhere at all.

userv is a Unix system facility to allow one program to invoke another when only limited trust exists between them. It is a tool for system administrators, who often find themselves with a program running as one user which needs to be able to do certain things as another user. For example, the author's machine's news system needs to scan its users' newsrcs to ensure that the right newsgroups are fetched. Before userv that part of the news system had to run as root, and clumsily use `su'.

MCS MyRoute helps diagnose connectivity problems with detailed network routing discovery and analysis, providing visibility to poor-performing networks and devices. It includes a Java applet that enables remote users to easily test connections from the MyRoute server. Essential diagnostic tools including traceroute, ping, reverse DNS, and whois are combined into a single graphical interface that analyzes Internet connections, reporting quick and essential data points for finding connectivity problems. An IP location database identifies the geographical location of IP addresses and Web servers, showing the path of an Internet connection on a global map.

vpnd is a daemon which connects two networks on network level either via TCP/IP or a (virtual) leased line attached to a serial interface. All data transfered between the two networks are encrypted using the unpatented free Blowfish encryption algorithm with a key length of up to 576 bits (may be downgraded to a minimum of 0 bits to suit any legal restrictions).

Wipe repeatedly writes special patterns to the file or files to be destroyed, using the fsync() call and/or the O_SYNC bit to force disk access, in order to lessen the chance of data recovery using techniques such as magnetic force microscopy.

Xautolock monitors console activity under the X window system, and fires up a program of your choice if nothing happens during a user configurable period of time. You can use this to automatically start up a screen locker in case you tend to forget to do so manually before having a coffee break.

X-Bone dynamically deploys and manages Internet overlays to reduce their configuration effort and increase network component sharing. It discovers, configures, and monitors network resources to create overlays over existing IP networks. It uses two-layer IP-in-IP tunneled overlays and supports existing applications and unmodified routing, multicast, and DNS services in unmodified operating systems. X-Bone also support IPsec within overlays.

XmlBlaster is XML based MOM (Message oriented Middleware) with a lot of features. It is a publish/subscribe and point-to-point MOM server which exchanges XML-encoded messages. Communication with the server is based on CORBA (using JacORB), RMI, XML-RPC, native socket, or a persistent HTTP plugin. Subscribers can use XPath expressions to filter the messages they wish to receive and add their own MIME-based filter plugins. C/C++, Java, Perl, Python, VisualBasic.net, C#, and PHP client demos are included in the xmlBlaster test suite, and Tcl and Python demo clients are scheduled. XmlBlaster also provides a browser callback framework, allowing browsers (Netscape, Mozilla, MSIE) to receive instant callbacks over a persistent http connection. A security plugin framework allows authentication/authorization in many ways. Currently there are LDAP- and passwd-based plugins available.
