X Python Newsreader (XPN) is a multi-platform newsreader with Unicode support. It has features like scoring/actions, X-Face and Face decoding, muting of quoted text, newsrc import/export, find article and search in the body, spoiler char/rot13, random taglines, and configurable attribution lines.
Newsstar fetches news and posts it to a local news server: INN, s-news, and sn are supported. What makes newsstar special is that it can make multiple simultaneous connections, not only to one server, but to several, supporting up to 10 "threads". Before fetching each article, it checks that it hasn't already been downloaded by another thread or in a previous session. It can also "pipeline" article requests to make better use of available bandwidth. SSL is supported.
alph implements and analyzes historical and traditional ciphers and codes, such as polyalphabetic, substitutional, and mixed employing human-reconstructable algorithms. It provides a pipe filter interface in order to encrypt and decrypt block text to achieve transparency. The program is meant to be used in conjunction with external programs that transfer data, resulting in transparent encryption or decryption of information. The program can thus be used as a mail filter, IRC filter, IM filter, and so on.
Binbot is an easy-to-use newsreader for downloading binaries from Usenet. It was designed to browse large binary newsgroups efficiently, and to download huge files quickly. It supports all common article encodings, multiple servers, and NZB files. It also includes built-in access to Web-based Usenet search engines, and automatic unrar, unzip, and unsplit capabilities.
nntpfs is a FUSE module for mounting the data offered by NNTP servers. Read-only access to the servers is provided. The Network News Transfer Protocol or NNTP is an Internet application protocol for the distribution of news and occasionally binary files. Usenet represents the most common usage of the NNTP protocol. The Filesystem in Userspace (FUSE) interface allows user application code to create its own filesystems and publish them using kernel support.
Turquoise SuperStat reads the contents of a Fidonet message area in one of its supported formats or Usenet news groups and creates toplists over massive quoters, senders, original content per message, Fidonet nets (Fidonet only), Internet topdomains, receivers (Fidonet only), subjects, and used software, as well as graphs over posting by weekday and time of day. It supports Squish, *.MSG, FDAPX/w, JAM, MyPoint, and tanstaafl's message area base format, as well as Usenet news groups over NNTP or in news spools. Command line and GUI versions are included.
newslite is a command line tool to download from binary newsgroups and decode multi-part and single-part yENC and UU (Unix-to-Unix) encoded files. It is resource efficient in terms of CPU usage and memory, builds a "title list" in order to ease group content analysis, and is robust in cases of news server connection loss.
hellanzb is an application that retrieves and processes NZB files and makes obtaining files from Usenet as hands-free as possible. Once fully installed, all that is required is moving an NZB file to the queue directory. Downloading, par-checking, and un-raring is done automatically by the program.
