Re: Universal Source Package
I believe that a uniform standard is indeed NEEDED, in order to advance the popularity and integration of multiple platform distributions. As a Linux user, with a prevailing taste for Slackware, (mostly for the good feeling you get when doing everything manually), I still prefer compiling everything from source, rather than using tgz packages, or, eghast RPMs.
However, if a Universal Source Package is to be received widely, it will be NECESSARY to incorporate absolute fine tuning with respect to any and all variablesoptions in the MAKEFILE, etc. I believe this will keep the freedom of system control while allowing those who wish to automate their installations do so.
Just a few thoughts I had on the subject. Very interesting idea. I hope to see it developed.
