Could you elaborate on the licensing terms for
this project? I don't see a specific license
available on your web page, and I'm confused about
what "freely distributable" means with a
binary only release. Do you expect to release source
with this project, or will it remain binary only?
A link to the actual text of the license off your
web page would help.
Policy should be consistent across platforms for commercial and free apps
Freshmeat already accepts appindex entries for commercial UNIX software. If the Freshmeat staff decide they don't want to support appindex entires for Windows software, it shouldn't be based on the presumption that the software is commercial, therefore irrelevant, or free, and therefore related to Free Software.
This means (from my perspective) that if you don't want to publish entries for commercial Windows software, you shouldn't publish entries for Free Windows software either. However, that has *nothing* to do with whether the software is commercial or Free, and everything to do with whether the Freshmeat staff wants to limit tracking and publication to UNIX oriented software.
However, if you take this position and implement a policy to limit the database to UNIX applications, you should also remove MacOS, BEOS, and applications for any other OS out there, except UNIX. Now, after editing the database to maintain this consistent policy, just how do you handle cross platform projects like ABIWord and Mozilla?
IMHO it would be far easier to just accept any and all appindex entries for both commercial and non-commercial apps across *ALL* platforms, and let the users decide which one's they like. As long as licensing is well established us users can figure out for ourselves which apps we wish to D/L.
