XPLC is a component system that tries to enable the use of components in a pervasive way. It aims to be easy to use, have low speed and size overhead, and be language and platform neutral. Basically, the idea is to leave no excuse for an application not to be component-enabled (being a component and/or using components).

I *think* we're currently using NSIS, for some value of "currently"? I'd have to check with the Windows maintainer...
XPLC (/projects/xplc/) is highly related to this subject. It allows for modularity through strong interfaces, and is extremely lightweight (unlike CORBA, for example). It doesn't offer inter-process communication, only modularity and binary compatibility (use something like D-Bus for IPC).
