Rute (Rute Users Tutorial and Exposition) is a book on GNU/Linux that aims to be the definitive guide for new users as well as sufficing as training course material, covering both the RHCE and LPI requirements. It covers essential theory to UNIX as well as giving practical tutorials on all fundamental aspects of Unix administration, from basic commands, the theory of TCP/IP, the Linux filesystem, through to configuration of mail, DNS, and other servers, through hardware configuration and package management. It is not Unix-specific but tends to give examples suited to Debian and RedHat-like systems. Rute comes in HTML and PDF formats.
PaulOS is a reference implementation of an embedded operating system which supports a subset of POSIX geared for embedded realtime single process applications. It is written to allow applications to be developed under GNU/Linux or FreeBSD and then recompiled without changes for the target architecture. It features POSIX file descriptors, a TCP stack (LwIP) with a BSD socket API, an ANSI C library, a DNS resolver library, and a minimal pthread library. A number of GNU/Linux network applications have been ported to it.
sheerdns is a master DNS server whose zone records are stored on a One-Record-Per-File bases. Because of this, it is the simplest of any DNS to configure, the easiest to update, and the most efficient for networks that experience a lot of updates (for example master servers for dynamic IP address ranges). You never have to restart it; any updates are available immediately without having to notify the sheerdns process.
imapspamfilter is a client-side IMAP client that deletes spam mail without downloading the mailbox. It does this by looking only at the header and the first 1024 bytes of the body, and applying a set of heuristics to decide if the mail is spam. It prints a list of suspect messages, asks for confirmation, and then deletes them all in place.
Proto Balance is a load balancing and traffic management system that can handle up to 10,000 concurrent connections and 20,000 downloads per second. Proto Balance is a load balancer and TCP traffic port forwarder for high availability. It features an easy-to-use Web interface that requires minimal knowledge of networking and no command-line experience. Its target audience includes enterprise cluster providers, Internet service providers, and network administrators.
PTRANS reads P5 and P6 (PGM, PPM, PNM) files, and performs Floyd-Steinberg dithering and scaling while only holding two scanlines of image data at a time. It can be used on gigapixel images while only consuming a small amount of RAM. It outputs P4 (PBM) dithered monochrome bitmap and P5 (PGM) grayscale images. It performs pixel interpolation and smoothing. Gamma correction and contrast curves may be set from the command line.
Syntrillium's Cool Edit
Syntrillium's Cool Edit is a sound file editor. Because it runs on
a different platform, and because it has a completely different
target market, I see no conflict whatsoever. Further, on their
web page is no (R) or (TM) next to `Cool Edit'. Finally, it is
logistically infeasable for this US based company to sue me in
South Africa. Get real.
